Interview With The Vampire

Cast:  Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst, Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater

Director:  Neil Jordan

1994

Based on the hugely successful novel of the same name, by Anne Rice, the movie was met with critical acclaim and earned over $220 Million at the box office.  It received Oscar nominations for Best Art Direction and Best Original Score while Kirsten Dunst received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Story:  Beginning in a hotel room in modern day San Francisco, a vampire, Louis de Pointe du Lac,  recounts his life story to a reporter.  From 1791 when he first encountered the vampire Lestat who changed him, to their conversion of a young girl who lived as their daughter, to his travels to Europe and finally his return to America.

Gay Factors:  Filled with huge gay overtones - Lestat (Tom Cruise) picks Louis to be his life long companion.  Lestat seduces another young male whom he feeds upon.  Later Armand (Antonio Banderas) tells Louis that he's beautiful and Armand wants Louis as his companion.  Louis and Armand almost share a kiss.  When Louis returns to America and finds Lestat, Lestat once again tells him he's beautiful as always.  All the male vampires in this story seem to pick another male as their life long companions.

The film is more subtle about labeling sexuality, whereas the original novel is much more specific in labeling their bisexuality.

Eulogy For A Vampire

Cast:  Ryan G. Metzger, Sal Bardo, Wilson Hand

Director:  Patrick McGuinn

2009

I haven't seen this one yet, so sorry but no review; but i'm trying to get as many listed as possible before Halloween so people have a wider selection to choose from for a creepy, gay Halloween!

Story:  An unconcious young drifter is taken to a monastary to recover, but then he begins to seduce and convert the monks to join his league of undead.

The Lost Boys

Cast:  Corey Feldman, Corey Haim, Jami Gertz, Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Edward Herrmann, Bernard Hughes, Dianne Wiest

Director:  Joel Schumacher

1987

An 80's star packed classic, mixing horror and comedy, and being at the forefront of launching the teen vampire craze.

Story:  Two brothers move with their recently divorced mother to a California town plagued with gang violence and mysterious disappearances.  The brothers soon conclude that the town is infested with vampires.

Gay Factors:  I'm reserved to include this film as being gay, but other sites have listed it, so I will too.  At the very least, its director, Joel Schumacher is gay.  The film is sited as having unintentional gay overtones - the attractive young man being stalked by the older male vampire; the gang of bad guys only has one female member, whom the guys don't show avert sexual interest in; David tricks Michael into swallowing some of his bodily fluids; Michael comes home sporting a single ear ring (back in the 80's some still considered it gay for a guy to wear a single ear ring - there was the whole debate about which ear was considered gay, but some consider either gay and effiminate) but the ear ring was the sign of the vampire clan.  And at last, the gayest moment of all:  Sam opens his closet where he has a sexy poster of Rob Lowe hanging on his door.

Overall, don't expect a huge gay pride parade of revelation in this film, the gayness is extremely subtle amongst a "straight" cast and film, but it is an enjoyable film.

Scab

Cast:  Sean Galuszka, Natalie Avital, Richard Alan Brown, Dan Glenn, Linda Pine, Susan Spano, Josh Evans, Cody Cash, Dylan Vox

Director:  Thomas Jason Davis

2005

I expected this film to be another softcore porn hiding under the guise of "horror" especially considering that a few of the cast are gay porn stars, but this actually was a real movie.  Yes, there is some full frontal nudity and some sex but much of the sex is off screen.  It does have a creepy vibe at times but there's a bit too much drama and drags at almost 2 hours long.  The acting is far better than I expected but the film quality is dark, low budget and has that 80's/pre-digital/aged look, despite only being a few years old.

Story:  A one night stand gone bad leaves Ajay with a new thirst in life.  No matter how hard he tries, the urge for blood grows and his temptation takes over.  His friends take him to Las Vegas in hope of some relief, but even Vegas can't tame his thirst for blood.

Vapid Shallow Models Must Die

Cast:  Paolo Carascan, Anthony Cozad, Kate Crash

Director:  Michael Haboush

2006

This one is beyond ultra low budget.  You can find better filmography on youtube!  The acting is awful with nearly no plot except a semi rip of Haboush's other film, A Slice Of Terror, which actually comes off as a better film than this one (never thought I'd say Slice Of Terror better than anything).  The only thing decent about this film is some full frontal nudity, but that isn't even great.

Story:  An overweight photographer who was teased and rejected of his own dreams of being a model, takes his revenge by using hypnosis to kill other "beautiful" models.

Apartment Zero

Cast:  Hart Bochner, Colin Firth

Director:  Martin Donovan

1988

Apartment Zero is a dramatic, suspense thriller from Argentina, not standard horror.  Low budget and a bit draggy but worth mentioning.

Story:  Adrian advertises for a new roommate, meeting Jack, and the two fall into brief domestic harmony, but both have their own emotional baggage.  Along the way, Adrian falls for Jack but then begins to suspect that Jack is actually the government agent turned serial killer that's been terrorizing the neighborhood.

Gay Factor:  Gay overtones; Adrian and Jack somewhat play as a domestic couple but Adrian is more repressed and in disgust of Jack's promiscuity.  Adrian claims to like women but comes off as a very emotionally repressed homosexual and is clearly smitten with Jack.  Jack admits to his bisexuality and implies relationships with other men in the apartment building, including picking up a gay man at the airport.

If you enjoy Hart Bochner, catch him in Urban Legends:  Final Cut, a traditional style slasher flick that also has a gay male and two lesbian characters.

The Covenant

Cast:  Steven Strait, Laura Ramsey, Sebastian Stan, Toby Hemingway, Taylor Kitsch, Chace Crawford, Jessica Lucas, Kyle Schmid

Director:  Renny Harlin

2006

The Covenant is more a supernatural thriller than actual horror, with a large focus on witchcraft amidst what seems to be a teen soap opera.  With a $20 Million budget, the effects come off really good.  Nothing really scary here but it is a decent movie.

Story:  The four Sons of Ipswich are like a mini fraternity, an ancestral legacy of supernatural power, coming from the founding fathers of the original Ipswich colony.  This small group finds themselves torn apart with jealousy and mistrust upon the arrival of a new girl and new boy in town, but they must resolve their problems and come together to battle a new evil power that threatens them all.

Gay Factor:  Other sites list this one as gay, so I am, but the movie itself isn't as gay as I thought.  Yes, there's shirtless guys and male nudity and all about male bonding but a central part of the story revolves around Caleb's relationship with the new girl, Sarah.  There is some gay subtext and the film definitely plays easy on gay eyes.  Definitely a gay subtext when the guys argue "you risk exposing us all." like a secret closeted affair.  At one point, a boy kisses another boy (after knocking him near unconcious and planning to kill him).  At times, the other boys come across as gay:  when Reid smacks his towel at the other guy's ass in the locker room, then shakes his own naked ass cheering "say my name." or when two guys get into a fight, calling the other gay and his defense is basically a mock of the other's small penis; the guys do hug a lot and seem clingy at times; and there's a funny line about "How about I make you my wi-atch?"

Of related interest, the film's co-star, Sebastian Stan, played a closeted gay male on NBC's Kings.  Another co-star, Chace Crawford, who also appeared on Gilmour Girls, used to live with Ed Westwick and there were tons of rumors about a secret gay relationship between the two (see the post below for a few pics of the drunk couple).
