The Covenant

Cast:  Steven Strait, Laura Ramsey, Sebastian Stan, Toby Hemingway, Taylor Kitsch, Chace Crawford, Jessica Lucas, Kyle Schmid

Director:  Renny Harlin

2006

The Covenant is more a supernatural thriller than actual horror, with a large focus on witchcraft amidst what seems to be a teen soap opera.  With a $20 Million budget, the effects come off really good.  Nothing really scary here but it is a decent movie.

Story:  The four Sons of Ipswich are like a mini fraternity, an ancestral legacy of supernatural power, coming from the founding fathers of the original Ipswich colony.  This small group finds themselves torn apart with jealousy and mistrust upon the arrival of a new girl and new boy in town, but they must resolve their problems and come together to battle a new evil power that threatens them all.

Gay Factor:  Other sites list this one as gay, so I am, but the movie itself isn't as gay as I thought.  Yes, there's shirtless guys and male nudity and all about male bonding but a central part of the story revolves around Caleb's relationship with the new girl, Sarah.  There is some gay subtext and the film definitely plays easy on gay eyes.  Definitely a gay subtext when the guys argue "you risk exposing us all." like a secret closeted affair.  At one point, a boy kisses another boy (after knocking him near unconcious and planning to kill him).  At times, the other boys come across as gay:  when Reid smacks his towel at the other guy's ass in the locker room, then shakes his own naked ass cheering "say my name." or when two guys get into a fight, calling the other gay and his defense is basically a mock of the other's small penis; the guys do hug a lot and seem clingy at times; and there's a funny line about "How about I make you my wi-atch?"

Of related interest, the film's co-star, Sebastian Stan, played a closeted gay male on NBC's Kings.  Another co-star, Chace Crawford, who also appeared on Gilmour Girls, used to live with Ed Westwick and there were tons of rumors about a secret gay relationship between the two (see the post below for a few pics of the drunk couple).
