Fright Flick

CAST: Chad Allen, Richard D. Curtin, Todd Jenkins, Daphne Khoury, Adam Kitchen, Tyler
Brockington, Natalie Jones, Allyn Carrell, Charles Baker

DIRECTOR:  Israel Luna
2011

From the director of Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives, Israel Luna, comes a new chapter of horror.  This low budget indie film makes fun of its lack of great talent by starting off with an F-Grade porn style actress giving the worse of the worse, after which the main cast turns to be a major improvement (or at least compared to the starter).  At first its unoriginality seems to be just part of the standard horror fare.  It's a horror movie about making a horror movie and the cast starts to get slaughtered.  We've seen that before - Wes Craven's New Nightmare, Scream 3 and Urban Legends:  Final Cut to name a few.  Even the scene eerily resembling one from A Nightmare On Elm Street seemed due to lack of originality.  However, by the end, I see this film as more of a low budget homage to the classics.   At one point, in a 10-15 minute stretch, we rapidly flash from scene to scene to scene that are exact copies from the original Halloween IIScream, Scream 2, Friday The 13th (original) and Friday The 13th Part 2.  The rapidfire copycat does seem a bit humorous how they string them together and it lacks the emotion and intensity of their original films, but it also triggers that thing in your brain to reminisce and appreciate the classics.  Likewise, the killer of this film lacks the charisma of a Billy Loomis or Mrs. Loomis or even a Ben Willis, the fisherman, of I Know What You Did Last Summer and I can't tell if that's due to the lack of talent or part of making fun of itself.  Nothing award winning here but i'd watch it again.

Gay Factor:  Besides coming from the director of another gay film, its only known name actor is Chad Allen, the former kiddie star/teen heartthrob turned out & proud homo in real life, although he plays a straight character in this film.  This film does include three gay male characters and a questionable fourth, alongside a majority heterosexual cast.  Co-star Richard D. Curtin, one of the gay characters, is also in the director's film Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives.

Story:  A B-grade actress gets slaughtered haulting production of the horror film she's starring.  Two years later, the cast re-esembles to film its sequel, but once again murder finds it way onto the set.  A lot of behind the scenes secrets finally leads to the motives behind our new slasher.

Creatures From The Pink Lagoon

CAST:  Nick Garrison, Lowell Deo, Evan Mosher
DIRECTOR:  Chris Diani
2006

This cheesy little diddy masks its low budget by presenting itself in black & white as a film from the 50's or 60's.  Actually, it takes place in 1967, but it has more of a 50's feel.  It's like The Twilight Zone mixed with Leave It To Beaver meets Ozzie And Harriet in a gay universe.  It is original among the modern gay "horror" flicks, but not scary.  Its humor is a tongue-in-cheek, ah shucks 50's/60's style from a gay angle instead of the typical over the top campiness of many gay horror flicks.  If you feel nostalgic for old black & white zombie flicks or ever wondered what a gay sitcom would've been like in the 1950's, check this one out.  Otherwise, for a more modern gay friendly zombie flick, you might want to check out Zombies Of Mass Destruction.

Story:  A contamination from the local chemical plant has spread the West End Virus to mosquitos who in turn infect the cruisers at the nearby rest stop turning them into zombies.  A group of gay friends are meeting for a weekend birthday party at a house on the lagoon, but their gay ole time is about to be spoiled by a pack of flesh eating gay zombies.

Teen Wolf's Danny

A few pics of Teen Wolf's out gay character, Danny (Keahu Kahuanuil).  On the show he's a star lacrosse player along with the wolfie himself, Scott; he's best friends with Scott's rival, Jackson (Colton Haynes); and has a budding friendship with Scott's best bud, Stiles.  Danny only has a small role on the show so far, only appearing in half the episodes, but hopefully much more next year when the show returns.

Glee does Thriller

Since I just did Zombies Of Mass Destruction (see below), i'll stick to zombies for one more little treat...

I call it one of the gayest straight shows on TV, its Glee!  Why so gay?  Well, if you haven't watched it, there's the budding relationship between two gay boys, Kurt & Blaine; there's the mostly closeted lesbian love affair between two cheerleaders; and half a dozen times per episode somebody breaks out into a musical fantasy.

So, here they are, from Season 2 Episode 11.  The glee club joins up with the football team to do a mashup of the classic Thriller and Heads Will Roll.  If you havent watched the show, check it out.  Season 3 starts soon...

Zombies Of Mass Destruction

CAST: Doug Fahl, Cooper Hopkins, Janet Armand, Russell Hodgkinson, Cornelia Moore, James Mesher, Bill Johns

DIRECTOR: Kevin Hamedani

 2008

Part of the 8 Films To Die For series, this one's a total gorefest & bloodbath.  Not really a typical gay movie, most of the cast is straight except two of the main characters, but definitely worth watching.  Better than many of the low budget gay horror films.  The first couple kills come totally unexpected and original.  There is some humor but it comes off in the right places.  This one's not very campy except to the extent that zombies always seem a bit campy.  Many of the main characters have to overcome varying forms of bigotry.  A definite political message to this film, but it doesn't get in the way of the good horror.  Moreso, it adds to the conflict of trying to survive alongside each other.

Story:  Tom and his boyfriend Lance are returning to Tom's hometown, Port Gamble, for a visit to mom and to finally come out of the closet.  Local school teacher, Cheryl Banks, is planning a political run for mayor to overturn the longtime mayor, Hal Burton.  An American born Iranian girl is struggling with her father's desire to embrace his old fashioned middle eastern values.  Everyone's plans get put on hold when the town gets overtaken with zombies which the government calls a viral infection caused by terrorism.  Now they all must band together to survive the living dead.

Sex/Nudity:  the 2 guys kiss.  No sex or nudity.

The Gay Bed & Breakfast Of Terror

CAST:  Mari Marks, Mark Soldier, Georgia Jean, Robert Borzych, Hilary Schwarrz, Vinny Markus, Shannon Lee, Denise Heller, Derek Long, Allie Rivenbark, James Tolins, Lisa Block-Wieser, Jim Polivka, Noah Naylor

DIRECTOR:  Jaymes Thompson

I expected to hate this movie but it turned out to be a fun flick.  There's tons of blood and several unexpected moments of horror as well as several crazy twists.  It is campy but it starts off pretty normal except the over the top caricature of the religious nut, Helen.  The most outrageous camp moments don't come till the last hour and still mostly from Helen and her family.  At two hours long, it did start dragging a bit in the last half hour with several flashback sequences.  Nothing award winning here but good for a gay flick trying to balance humour and horror.

The Story:  Everyone's going to the Blue Party, but 5 gay and lesbian couples converge on a desolate bed & breakfast run by a conservative, religious extremist and her daughter who has a thing for pretty girls.  The mother, Helen, sets out on a killing spree but there are other unexpected killers lurking around this isolated B&B.

SEX/NUDITY:  brief full frontal, male ass, tits, male/male kissing, female/female kissing, male sex.
