Hellraiser is a true horror classic, based on the novel The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker and introduces one of the best known villains in horror: the demonic Pinhead. The film is also written and directed by Clive Barker. Now, over twenty years after its release, some of the effects may be a put off to new generations of horror fans used to super realistic digital effects, but it remains a fan favorite and ruled the horror scene in the time of its release. Hellraiser spawned a total of 9 films and there are currently plans for a remake of this classic.
Story: Frank Cotton, a self proclaimed hedonist, buys an antique puzzle box which he believes is a gateway to new carnal pleasures but instead it's a gateway to hell. When Frank goes missing, his brother's family moves into his house. The unfaithful wife is actually Frank's former lover and when she discovers the zombie of her ex-lover, she promises to bring him blood sacrifices to restore his body. Murder follows in an attempt to revive Frank but even if he can be revived, they still must deal with the demonic cynobites and the sadistic Pinhead.
Gay Factor: The film itself doesn't have any gay themes but its writer/director, Clive Barker, is an out homosexual, and also a legend among horror creators, thus earning this film a spot amongst our gay horror films.
